Selkirk Sessions

Since 2015 I’ve been working as a guitar instructor at Selkirk College in Nelson BC, Canada. It’s one of those jobs that just combines all I love into one neat package: music, teaching, and talent! Over the past few years I’ve seen talented singers, drummers, guitarists etc. More and more I’ve been desiring to share these awesome musicians with all of you. Therefore I have started the #selkirksessions. Essentially featuring musicians I meet here in the Kootenays, but with an emphasis on Students and local talent. In this video you see Selkirk College graduate Carmina Bolinao, a great singer who is -like me- active on youtube and currently living and playing in Vancouver.

Setting up the recording:

Carmina contacted me about a week before she came to Nelson and suggested we could do a recording together. What you see in the video was the first time for the both of us playing Time After Time together (original by Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman). We had the recording room for 3 hours but setting up camera’s, mics, and lights took more than half that. By the time we started playing there wasn’t much time left but we had faith there would be at least one usable take at the end of this session.

It wasn’t until the very last take, with 2 minutes left on the clock that we had something we could share with you 🙂

A word of thanks to Selkirk College and Logan Thorpe. Logan supplied us with a very nice mic to record the vocals and we were able to use the video room & panasonic cameras from the college which was awesome!
